Josef Drexl is Director of the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition. He is also Honorary Professor at the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich, Member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and Chair of the Project Coordination Board of the Munich Intellectual Property Law Center (MIPLC). As visiting professor, he taught at Oxford University, the Libera Università Internazionale per gli Studi Sociali Guido Carli in Rome, New York University and the Université de Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas. His current research focus is on intellectual property and competition-law issues of the new digital economy. He served as founding chair of the Academic Society for Competition Law from 2003 to 2013 and he is a vice-president of the Association Internationale de Droit Economique.
